The first thing you need to know about me is that this is my dream job. When I applied and first talked to the partners here, I knew in my bones this was where I was supposed to be and where I would have the most potential for growth. I love working with these women and our clients.
I’m native to Kansas City, and love the fact that we are a small local company. I graduated from Northwest Missouri State with a Bachelor of Science in Business degree and worked for four years with a couple of large national firms. It’s almost impossible to communicate the difference between working for a small firm with national reach, versus a large company trying to provide service to an individual, but I will try. The large firms are full of bureaucracy and just see people as a number- including their employees. At The Planned Approach, we are family and see our clients as part of that family. We see their struggles as our struggles. It makes us far more effective, in my experience. I get to care, and that is just cool. Our culture is one that would be hard to replicate. It is amazing to watch these smart, successful clients of ours let it all hang out and share what their real issues are, so we can help. But everything we do here seems to help them relax and do just that. I like making sure the details- from the set up of the office to the details of their numbers, are taken care of so that what they really need can be the focus of the discussion in an environment that makes people open up and share. Our clients likely appear to the world that they have it all together, but when you get to know them, you learn they have incredible challenges, too.
My role is pretty straightforward, but also challenging. I solve problems, preferably before they become problems. I do this internally with operations and with my group of clients. (That’s another cool thing about The Planned Approach. Steph and Kel have made it clear that we need to treat the clients of the firm like they are our personal clients- not “their” clients.) I spend my days preparing casework for meetings, going over client notes to make sure everything that needs to be done for them has been done or is being completed, and of course learning new things and how they work together. I also work on a lot of internal systems to make things go smoothly for the firm. I also spend quite a bit of time responding to the requests of clients as well as their advisors (their CPAs or Attorneys) to pull everything together. This used to be a little intimidating, but it’s a lot easier as I get to know everyone. I think the nature of the relationships at this firm is integral to how we practice.
On a personal note, I’m an only child, but I’m extremely close to my family, including my cousins. I’ve never had a bad birthday! I live downtown in all the excitement of Kansas City and love it. I’ve started to get involved in the community with various projects, but I haven’t found my passion yet. I like how involved we are with Operation Breakthrough, and I’m very much interested in growing my community involvement now that my career has taken off! If you can’t find me at work, I’m probably at the gym. I love to work out, which balances my love of potato chips.
